You probably don’t want to ‘hear’ this but your Japanese is quite cute. I hesitate to use the dreaded ‘kawaii’ word, but it is quite cute. =D

Bah, I’m way past getting aggravated over people qualifying my written Japanese as ‘cute’… I look on the bright side and consider it a vast improvement over the previous appraisal of my skills as “sounds like a girl” or simply bursting out laughing in my face (to usually catch themselves and try softening the blow by adding a “kawaii” at the end).

Seriously though: while I’ve gotten to an acceptable level in all other areas (speaking, reading) and shaken most of my beginner style, written expression is where I still need to make huge efforts. Essentially by lack of practice (one-liner emails and keitai msg do not really build your skills in that area), I have accumulated a major gap between what I can understand and what I usually write… To the extent that I am the first one noticing how childish this stuff reads, upon re-reading it… but usually afraid to go any more complex than that, because I know it would be riddled with stupid little mistakes or just plain unintelligible…
Somewhere on my list of things to do before I die (and before the year is over, preferably), is to get back to work on this blog, write at least once a week, and find a “blog exchange partner” to correct each other’s content (an idea I just had this week-end, quite brilliant, if I may say)…

:-) I didn’t burst out laughing at all. Yours is a very cute/gentle Japanese. I’d say few Japanese men speak like that - and for that, it is a compliment.

Funnily enough, I have less trouble with written Japanese than spoken Japanese (probably because I read/speak Mandarin). I esp. enjoyed studying from newspapers (though the content was often less than desirable, as you can imagine). So, my Japanese is invariably v. formal. Plus, I love Keigo, so to amuse myself, I often speak like that and correct the locals (for their shocking grammatical errors). Not pretty.

Therefore, conversely, my aim is to learn to speak like a (grammatically incorrect and obnoxious) local. :-( Quite a huge gap overhere, too.

Not to mention, my old Japanese professors from the past would have a fit (they who prided themselves on inflicting on me what they felt was ‘pretty’ kantou-ben). :-)

Best of luck anyhow, it’s great to see such perseverance.

Many friends who speak Japanese have the same concern with “cute” Japanese word/-ending,but I think it’s not a big issue unless you need it for busisness letter. Better than rude or aggressive!I understand you want to go to the next level and speak in the way Japanese do though.

I’ve just started to teach Japanese. It is just a casual lesson at cafe, and I’d like to get some idea what’s the problem in studing Japanese in your level coz my new student has got 3級.

I can be your exchange partner, but not blog=( I don’t have one and prefer email.
