I guess you are still learning Japanese. 笑い茸 is not the word for poisonous mushroom, it is a type of poisonous mushroom. When you ingest it, a one of the side effects of being poisoned is that you get excited and laugh.

They are grey-ish, about 4cm wide, 10cm tall, and have black gills. Do not eat them.

The normal word for poisonous mushroom is 毒茸(どくたけ), as you would expect. Cheers.

Mister Moy: been learning and certainly will be for many more years to be :)

I must say I highly suspected some sort of correlations with the not-so-lethal “poisonous” aspects of certain mushrooms… Didn’t realize it was a specific type of mushroom… Interestingly, I think WWWJDIC might have gotten it slightly wrong: they really do give 笑い茸 as “poisonous mushrooms” whereas toadstools (a mushroom that sounds similar in its effect, albeit not its appearance, to the one you describe above) is given as 毒茸.

Anyway, not having people handy to consult on this sort of matter nowadays makes it easy to get it wrong, thanks a lot for your comment!
